Beaches

Yesterday, we strayed from Indian Lake and drove west in search of sand. We set our sights on New Buffalo State Beach, located just inside Michigan as it borders Indiana.

East coasters and California folk may protest, but I declare the beaches of Lake Michigan to be the best in the United States. While Alex was water skiing and exploring Indian Lake, I was being towed on an inner tube behind Grandpa Dave’s ski boat on Lake Michigan. Almost every summer, my parents, siblings, and the whole Golay bunch would spend a week in one of the idyllic beach towns on Lake Michigan, like St. Joseph and South Haven.

Such wonderful memories that have been turned into scrapbooks.

And such frigid water.

Anyway, back to yesterday. We packed a picnic lunch and drove about 80 miles west to New Buffalo. We staked our claim to several feet of white sand and spent the day exploring sand dunes, playing paddle ball, basking in the sun, and wading in that frigid water. I also tried to be artsy fartsy with my Nikon.

On our way home, we stopped at Nancy’s in downtown New Buffalo. We saw world famous strawberry milk shakes advertised and decided we must try them out. Nancy did not disappoint!

Below are some pictures, which are my attempt at convincing naysayers of Lake Michigan's beauty.

Welcome to New Buffalo City Beach!

Trying the be artsy fartsy.

Joni, Andrew, Deanna, Alex and moi!

 A mother and her boys.

Ready for a sand dune trek.

 New Buffalo from above.

Perfection over yonder.

Clearly not happy about this picture, but happy about milk shakes!

  1. Deanna with her boys and Alex with a strawberry milkshake....those are real smiles of joy...and little of heaven on earth. It is good to document the big and small blessings in life.
