Hearts Full
This past weekend, Alex and I took off on another one of our weekend getaways. We drove north on Interstate 65 to the Windy City, where our friends Joe and Lisa awaited us!
Since graduating from college, Alex and I have met up with Joe Peachey in all sorts of places. Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Colorado, even Florida! Joe and his wife Lisa came to California several times while we lived there. And every time Alex and I came "home" to Indiana and Illinois for holidays or vacations, we met up with these two in a restaurant or random coffee shop.
But quality time is limited when you live really far away. You're always "catching up" and never really living life together.
Alex and I are so pleased to live within driving distance of great friends like Joe and Lisa, people with whom we have maintained close relationships with but have yearned for more consistent relationship.
So like I said, we took the opportunity to visit Joe and Lisa in Chicago! It was my first time to be a real local in the city. Because let's be honest. Bourbonnais is not Chicago.
Joe and Lisa live in a great apartment on Clark Street, which is inside Chicago's South Loop. It's in the middle of the action, and is within walking distance of everything.
We spent most of our time visiting amazing restaurants. It's pretty normal with Joe, who has always dragged us to little cafes or cookie shops he saw on the Food Network or read about in a local blog. My favorite meal was carnitas at The Taco Joint. And the fresh guacamole was to die for!
On Sunday, Joe took us on an epic sailing adventure on Lake Michigan. The sky was clear, the water, pristine. The wind was strong enough to scare me a few times, but the competent captain and his first mate, Alex, had everything under control! Alex practiced some of his sailing tricks that my dad recently taught him on Eagle Creek Lake in Indianapolis. The kid shows real promise!
Alex and I headed home on Sunday night with our hearts full.
We are thankful for friends, near and far. For the joy and wisdom they bring. We are thankful for this journey. And partners to walk alongside.
